Pizzeria Posto, Somerville

From their website:

“Posto, a modern interpretation of a classic Italian pizzeria, enoteca and trattoria all presented in a “farm chic” open air concept”

“farm chic”? Did that elicit an eye roll from you also? I have no idea what “farm chic” is referring to; the space is still somewhat industrial feeling, reminiscent of the Carberry’s that was there previously. The restaurant is on the dark side, lit by candles.

We started with the honeycomb tripe and an order of rosemary fries. I love tripe and since it is seldom on a menu outside of Chinatown, I like to order it whenever possible. Plus, I believe in the Offal Principle; if it is on the menu, it has to be extra good, otherwise it would fail as a menu item. The Principle did not let me down; the tripe was delicious. The tripe was cooked until it achieved a silky, soft texture and the spicy tomato sauce was a perfect pairing. The fries were well fried with a fluffy interior and a crispy exterior, but I did not like the lemon flavor in the garlic aioli and asked for regular ketchup instead.

I asked about the size of the pizzas and was told they were 4 slices, enough for one. I thought $12-$16 is a bit steep for a personal pizza. The menu has lots of interesting topping combinations – we ordered a pizza with asparagus, guanciale, soft egg, parmesan and lemon zest, and a Tagliatelle Bolognese to split.

The pizza was larger than expected. I enjoyed the combination of flavors, but the egg was undercooked, even for me. I like runny yolks, not runny whites. Luckily, it was only on one slice of the pizza. The Bolognese was also good; the pasta was cooked correctly and the sauce was hearty and satisfying. It’s still not as good as Sweet Basil’s, though.

The service was friendly and attentive. I was surprised that there was no bread basket; what kind of Italian restaurant doesn’t offer a bread basket?

I think Posto is a fine addition to Davis Sq, albeit slightly pricy for a casual Italian eatery. Maybe one is extra for the “farm chic” aspect.
