Hungry Mother, Cambridge

Is there any point in writing this? After all, Hungry Mother was serving pulled pork sandwiches for lunch on Thursdays and Fridays all summer long, but it ended last week. My co-worker Billy and I noted with alarm that the summer had slipped by us and that we still had not tried it, so on the last day, I waited in the long line that snaked out
the door and down the stairs and procured 2 sandwiches. It’s not actually pulled pork but the “pork shoulder is smoked in hickory and apple wood for eight hours and then roasted in the oven for another 10. The meat is chopped, not shredded, piled high between slices of a house-made Pullman loaf, drizzled with vinegary barbecue sauce, and topped with pickled slaw.”

$9 is a hefty price for the medium sized sandwich, but the meat was smoky and succulent and the slaw was an excellent counterpoint. My only complaint is that the bread needed a little more heft to stand up to the filling. Billy loved it and then got really sad when he realized that he would have to wait till next summer for more.

So, even if you can’t get this sandwich anymore, let me encourage you to hit Hungry Mother for dinner.
