Cape Eats

Red Inn, Provincetown

Steve and I enjoyed a lovely long weekend on the Cape with his friends, Kerry and Bryan. They rent a small, but charming cottage; it sits atop the dunes and is a 30 second walk to the water. We got a picture worthy sunset the first night, but it rained the rest of the time. We braved the weather on Friday and drove in to Provincetown for dinner at the Red Inn.

One yelp review stated that the lobster and artichoke fondue was worth getting even if you were lactose intolerant and/or allergic to shellfish. Well, with a review like that, I had to order the fondue. It was served in a small, hollowed out sourdough round. It was messy and difficult to eat. I was surprised that there were abundant lobster chunks, but minimal artichoke flavor; one would expect it to be the other way around. I liked it, but I wouldn’t risk anaphylactic shock for it. I also got steamed mussels, which were solid, but not extraordinary.

Steve ordered the veal tenderloin special; it was served with a chimichurri sauce and mashed potatoes. I thought it was flavorful but, like my mussels, not particularly noteworthy. I tried a bite of Bryan’s scallops and enjoyed the citrus butter sauce.

Our server was fine and entrees range from mid 20’s to low 30’s, what you would expect to pay at a nice restaurant in Provincetown.

Russ and Marie's Marconi Beach BBQ & Seafood Restaurant, South Wellfleet

You can’t miss the plume of smoke coming from the restaurant when you drive by on Rt. 6. It is a sign that you are about to get real barbeque. We sent Steve for takeout and he brought back a full slab of pork ribs, a bucket of fried chicken and fries. The ribs were “fall of the bone” tender, which many people value, but I like a little chew to my ribs. They were also coated in sauce, which masked the flavor of any smoke that might have been there. However, the fried chicken was quite good, crispy and flavorful. The fries were a dud: stale and soggy.

Prices are reasonable; I think the whole order came to $40.
