Armsby abbey, Worcester

Our dinner reservation at Bocado was not for another hour and we were starving, so we popped in Armsby Abbey, a small gastropub for a drink and a nosh. There are 22 beers on tap and over 180 bottles offered. The menu is a great read – everything sounds so good, but the reality may fall short of expectations. Admittedly, we only ordered the Marcona almonds ($4.5) and Rillons ($12), so my sample size is small. Here the menu description of the rillions: Crisped cuts of pastured Adams Farm Heritage Pork Belly slow cooked in Duck Fat served with Fall spiced Apple Butter, Pickled local Apple, Brussel Sprout Leaves, Smoked Maple Air.

Sounds amazing, right? Well, the pork belly was inconsistent. There were 4 bites and my first was dry, but the second was an improvement. The “Fall spiced Apple Butter” is a fancy way to say applesauce and the “Smoked Maple Air” added no flavor (or texture, for that matter).

Our server was training, so she was young and enthusiastic. The prices are on the high side, but my cocktail was strong and tasty.
