Mike and Patty’s, Boston

The corner sandwich shop is tiny – there is a counter and a table that seats 6 uncomfortably. They have won many accolades for their sandwiches, especially “The Fancy,” a breakfast sandwich with fried egg, bacon, cheddar, avocado, red onion, house mayo on toasted multigrain ($8).

I met Jes there for a quick bite before seeing Catching Fire. The AMC Boston Common is a quick 10 minute walk away. We got there at 2:45pm and they close at 3:30pm. They were out of multigrain for my sandwich, so I got it on a torta roll instead. Jes ordered the Cubano (pork & ham, swiss, pickles, mustard on pressed French, $8) sans mayo. The sandwich arrives and there is, of course, mayo on it. They apologize and offer to make another, but they are now out of French bread as well, so she also got a torta roll. Mishaps aside, both sandwiches were excellent. It is had to go wrong with runny egg, crispy bacon and creamy avocado. Jes loved her sandwich as well; she declared the best Cubano she has had in a long time (despite the mayo and bread snafu).
