Armenian Market & Bakery, Watertown

"Where did you go for lunch?”

“The Armenian market & bakery in Watertown.”

“You mean Sevan? I love that place.”

“No, it’s actually called the Armenian market & bakery”

“Oh.”

I do not know why they could not come up with a more original name – I had the above conversation with 5 different people this past weekend.

The store is primarily groceries, but on the left side is a large deli space with 4 tables to sit at, if you decide to enjoy your food there. I started with a spinach and cheese boreg ($2.5), a layered phyllo dough pastry that is reminiscent of spanakopita. This was thinner than spanakopita and I missed the extra layers of crunch, but the filling was flavorful.

This was thinner than spanakopita and I missed the extra layers of crunch, but the filling was flavorful. My falafel wrap ($6) was large and inexpensive. The falafel itself was tender and not greasy, but there were too many pickles. I had to undo the sandwich and pluck half of them out. This lead to major structural integrity issues and it just became a mess. I still prefer Amsterdam Falafel.

The guy offered me a taste of the beef shawarma, from the vertical rotisserie. It was excellent - moist and flavorful with crispy edges. I will definitely get a beef shawarma wrap next time.

They make phyllo in the baklava from scratch and offered unconventional flavors like nutella and coconut, in addition to the traditional walnut or pistachio. I had a pistachio and a nutella piece. The pistachio which was excellent, but the nutella had a soggy bottom layer. It is $9 a pound.

It is located next to the Target in the Watertown mall and is a great place to stop for a get bite post shopping.
