Zing Pizza, Cambridge

Imagine, after a long day of work, dragging yourself to the gym - you don’t want to work out, but you know it’s good for your health. Now, imagine, as you descend in to the lobby there is a huge table giving away free pizza. Are you happy or are you angry? If you are me, you are angry at your gym’s attempt to sabotage you, and you storm pass the pizza, only to submit after your workout (hey, I’m only human).

That was my introduction to Zing Pizza, a gourmet pizzeria specializing in organic, hormone-free, local ingredients. It is a block away from my gym. I tried a slice of Blue October (roasted butternut squash sauce with spinach, mozzarella, caramelized onions and blue cheese.) It was delicious. So, when I finished my workout last Monday and decided I had no interest in cooking, I walked over and ordered a pizza that was ½ Zorba the Greek (turkey sausage, mozzarella, feta, olives) and ½ Annie Oakley (garlic spread, mozzarella, eggplant and basil), as well as a Smokey Dokey calzone (smoked mozzarella, roasted red peppers, mushrooms and spinach.

The crust is similar to Emma’s pizza; thin and crispy, but I think this crust has more flavor. It is made from a blend of organic whole wheat and white flours from a New England mill. I loved the toppings; lots of flavor packed in to each slice. The calzone was also quite good – really a testament to the importance of having good ingredients.  My only complaint is that the pizza is oblong shaped, so the box is a huge rectangle that won’t fit inside any fridge.
