Nappi Meats and Groceries, Medford

I guess Nappi used to be a grocery store/takeout joint, hence the strange name, but they had a recent renovation and it appears to be like any other restaurant. There is one big difference - there is no menu. You just tell the waitress what you want to eat and they make it for you. I guess they always have the basic Italian offerings; all sorts of pastas, sauces, and you can pair it with any protein they have available (sausages, seafood, meatballs, chicken, veal, etc.). I also saw some beautiful looking antipasto platters with prosciutto, artichoke hearts, eggplant, mushrooms, and roasted red peppers. It is cash only and BYOB.

I found the no menu concept a little stressful, to be honest. I want to peruse and see what tempts me on a menu. I couldn’t decide and I just ordered the first thing that came to mind - chicken, ziti and broccoli in an alfredo sauce. I would never normally order it; it’s kinda boring, but I’m glad I did - it was delicious. The chicken was really tender and flavorful. The portions are generous – I had enough for a second meal the next day. My dining companion had homemade fusilli with chicken and broccoli in a white wine sauce. He appeared to like it enough to finish his whole meal.

No menu also means you have no idea how much you just spent, but the two pastas came to $34, which is quite reasonable. The service was friendly. I didn’t have any of the bread; it looked like standard Italian loaf. I think next time I want to try the eggplant parm…or the veal marsala…no, wait, maybe sausage, pepper and onions.
