Nijiya, Medford

Nijiya, all you can eat sushi bar opened up in Medford Square recently. It is not a buffet, but rather a made-to-order menu. Nate and I went for lunch ($16) to try it out. It is $24 for dinner, but the menu is also larger (and includes sashimi, special rolls and desserts). It is $2 cheaper Mon-Thurs.

We started slow, as you can order as much as you want, but they will charge you for excessive leftovers. We ended up with:

Seaweed salad, shrimp shumai, spicy white tuna roll, eel and avocado roll, tuna, salmon and eel nigiri, Rainbow roll, spicy tuna roll, flying fish roe, yellowtail scallion roll, and a salmon and avocado roll.

My shrimp shumai was bizarre - never in my life have I seen it deep fried. It was mediocre at best. The seaweed salad was a little too salty. As for the sushi, the rice was better than I expected and the temperature was correct. The cuts were on the thin side, but that is to be expected at any AYCE sushi bar. I think the salmon and avocado roll was the best of the bunch. I think it's a reasonable meal for the lunch price, but I think I would rather go to Toraya and order a la carte.
