Gran Gusto, Cambridge

What would I do without Chow.com? People were raving about Gran Gusto and the great wood-fired, brick oven pizza they serve, so R and I hit it for lunch yesterday. It's in a strange location; it is in a large brick building that houses offices, nestled in a mostly residential area. You could drive right by it and not know it was a restaurant. The effects of this are evident, as there was only one other couple in the room despite it being 12:30pm on a Saturday.

We started with an appetizer of grilled calamari on a bed of arugula (what can I say, we love squid). The calamari was delicious; it was tender and had a great smoky flavor from the grilling that contrasted nicely with the pepperiness of the arugula.

The bread basket consisted of a plain Italian, and some focaccia, perfectly acceptable, nothing noteworthy.

I got seared sea scallops over white beans. My scallops was a shade over cooked, the beans were good, but the dish felt unbalanced, like it was lacking something. R got a mushroom pizza, and he pronounced it on par with his favorite pizza (Franca's in Waltham). The crust was very tender, it was loaded with mushrooms and instead of regular mozzarella, they top their pizzas with fresh buffalo mozzarella Quite delightful. R also really liked the sauce, although I didn't find it special. Along with the bill, came some biscotti, which is a nice touch.
