Gargoyles on the Square, Somerville

I guess it’s a weekend of repeat blogs. I’ve been to Gargoyles twice, once with R and once with R and the in-laws and we enjoyed both meals. Wendy and Shane were in town from NY for her Grandmother’s 90th, and she is very pregnant. I wanted to throw her a little baby shower, so I settled on brunch at Gargoyles. Every other restaurant has a Jazz brunch, but at Gargoyles they do a disco brunch, which is to say there is a disco ball, some lights and lots of ABBA playing. It’s hard not to groove to the music as you wait for your food. Besides, what says baby shower more than disco?

 

Along with Wendy and Shane, Wendy’s sister (and frequent reader of the Flog) Arias and her boyfriend Jeff were there. Gargoyles has some unique items on their brunch menu, along with the standard breakfast fare (eggs, French toast, etc.). We started with Reuben spring rolls and buffalo duck wings. I really liked both of these appetizers; the Reuben was pastrami in a spring roll wrapper, deep fat fried, what’s there not to like? The buffalo duck wings were 4 duck legs that had been seasoned with buffalo spice and cornmeal and fried. It’s served with blue cheese crumbles and celery sticks. It was delicious and different; both scored high points in my book.

 

On to the entrees: Jeff had the scrambled eggs, home fries and fruit salad (boring). I tried the home fries, which had spinach and I liked them. Arias had an enormous breakfast pizza with potatoes, bacon, spring onions and 2 sunny side up eggs. It could have easily served 2 people. The toppings were good, the crust was less like pizza crust and more pie like. I ordered the burger. I’ve been meaning to try their burger for ages and decided, despite the time (10:30am), to go for it. It was a good, solid burger; ½ lb of beef, cooked correctly on a grilled bun. I really enjoyed the waffle fries that came with it. R had the apple pecan French toast. It was boring and standard. Wendy ordered the catfish po’boy and that was good, too. The fish was tender and crispy, but the rice grits that came with it were just bad. It was like starchy, clumpy couscous. Shane’s dish was my favorite; he had the Southern crab Benedict. It was a perfectly poached egg over corned beef and a perfect fluffy, tender biscuit. The one thing is that there was no crab to be found in the Benedict. It’s was a mystery to us. It was still delicious.

 

Definitely put Gargoyles on your list of places to try, you won’t be disappointed.
