I was at a training in Billerica today and it seems from my brief research that there is one stand out restaurant in the area, Sichuan Gourmet. The question was would I be able to convince my coworkers to try a hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant in a strip mall instead of a nice standard issue Chili’s? Luckily for me they had enough trust in my gastronomic guidance and off we went to Sichuan Gourmet.
The place was packed when we arrived, but we were seated fairly quickly. I had the scallion pancakes and dan dan noodles. The scallion pancakes were superb, light and crispy and not at all oily. Dan dan noodles are a classic Sichuan dish consisting of noodles topped with a spicy sauce of minced pork, scallions and chili oil. The noodles were also delicious and I polished it all off.
I also tried the General Tso’s, which quite good. The chicken was moist and tender, and the batter was crispy and light. I thought the sauce was a tad sweet, but it helped to cut through the spiciness. The Sichuan style string beans were surprisingly good. They were perfectly cooked, not too al dente, but not too soft, and had great flavor. The vegetable lo mien and the beef with hot green peppers were also well liked, but I did not try either, so I can not report first hand.
I will definitely be back next time I have to be in Billerica.
