2008: Year in Review

Most memorable meals of 2008 (in no particular order):

Blue Ginger – Maybe it was the exquisite butterfish, or maybe it was Ming Tsai mocking us about taking a picture of his butt, but our 5 course tasting menu was divine.

Lawry’s Prime Rib – There’s nothing like a big hunk of meat and no one does prime rib better. Plus, I can’t deny the afterglow of victory always improves a meal.

Rosemary’s – Rosemary’s will always have a special place in my heart (or stomach?). Our meal there did not disappoint.

Honorable mentions:

Seldom Blues – The calamari appetizer was sublime. I love when a dish makes me think of an ingredient in a whole new way.

Tamarind Bay Coastal – The Manglorean lobster was excellent. I could drink a bowl of that sauce.

Maine Diner – It’s kitschy and cliché but the lobster bisque is worth the drive and the wait.

Best discoveries:

Karl’s Sausage Kitchen in Saugus. I am proud to be known as the “liverwurst lady”

Gitlo’s in Allston. It’s a hole in the wall, but how great is it that I can get dimsum at 8pm. The scallop shumai are my favorite.

Pollo a la brasa at Machu Picchu in Somerville. It’s damn good chicken, enough said.

Onion Rings at Scampa in Cambridge. They had no business being that good, but they were.

Potato pancakes at Café Polonia in Dorchester. They are the potato pancakes of your dreams.

Biggest disappointments –

Vela – Maybe I was expecting too much, but it made for a disappointing birthday dinner

Yono – I have only sent back two plates this year. This was one of them.

Arrows – This was the biggest disappointment of 2008. For $350, I expect nothing short of perfection. This didn’t even come close. And yes, this was the other place where I send back a plate.

I’m racking my brain and searching through the archives, but I can’t think of a dessert that was really outstanding. I guess that’s the downside of loving to bake, one becomes hard to impress.

For 2009:

My friend Mj has a list of restaurants to try posted on her fridge. Here’s my list for 2009, and we’ll see this time next year how many we managed to get to:

  1. O Ya
  2. Craigie on Main
  3. Oishii
  4. Scampo
  5. Benatti
  6. T.W. Food
  7. Estragon
  8. La Voile
  9. Garden at the Cellar
  10. Orinoco
  11. 75 Chestnut
  12. Trattoria Toscana

I’m sure there are others that I can’t think of right now, but 12 is a good start.

Happy New Year!!
