Daytripping: Portsmouth, NH

We spent the day with Mj, Brian and Lizzy in Portsmouth, NH. We met them at BG’s Boathouse and shared a Fisherman’s platter, fried oysters, lobster bisque, lobster roll, steamers, fries and onion rings.

The food was good, classic, fried seafood fare. The prices were reasonable and the service was accommodating (especially important when you have a toddler with you). We sat on the outside patio and enjoyed a little sun and a lovely view of the water.

After lunch we walked around downtown and found Byrne and Carlson, a small chocolatier. We got a small selection of caramels, truffles and fruit de pate. It was pricey, but excellent.

We also got ice cream at Izzy’s. The ice cream was okay, nothing special.  Mj declared that she liked the cake batter ice cream at Cold Stone better.

We grabbed an early dinner in Newburyport at the Black Cow Tap and Grill. It’s a lovely large space, also on the water. I got a swordfish BLT. My fish was overcooked, but it was still tasty. Brian got a lobster roll on a croissant, very decadent. R and Mj got burgers and both were cooked perfectly with nice crispy fries. R also had an appetizer of escargot topped with garlic butter and brie. It was great, especially with bread to soak up the butter.

I liked the restaurant a lot, the food was good with reasonable prices and decent service.
