Il Panino, RIP

It’s too sad for words; Il Panino in Cambridge is closing on Saturday. Apparently the landlord is raising the rent and they could not come to an agreement. I remember my first time there, in high school. I had the signature il panino sub (prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil). It may seem mundane now, but to my 14 year-old palate, it was a burst of flavors and textures never before experienced.

During high school, we would go for lunch (and dinner) all the time.

R’s first job was down the street, and we would go for lunch (and dinner) all the time.

Archit’s first apartment was across the street, and we would go for lunch (and dinner) all the time.

We went for one final meal tonight with Archit and Mansi. R and I shared an il panino and a spinach calzone for the last time. I would have cried, but the saltiness of my tears would have thrown off the balance of flavors.

I guess I’ll be going to the North End more often, now.

I just discovered their demise today and it really upset me. I work in Central Square and (until now) have regularly walked up there at lunchtime on nice days for an Il Panino sub. A real downer.

(I know R from chess if you're wondering how I got here.)

I was super sad when I found out about Il Panino too! :( I had my good-by meal that week. Bryan actually went back three times!

This is Jen, btw (married to Bryan who works with R) I stumbled upon your blog while reading Chowhound. Looks like you've been blogging about your dining experiences for awhile. I look forward to reading what you've said (and what you have to say) :)
