Garlic Dip at Arax Market, Watertown

All within 2 blocks of each other on Mt Auburn St. in Watertown are three Middle Eastern markets: Sevan, Arax and Massis. Sevan is where I usually go for a baklava fix, but I read about the hummus at Arax and decided to grab a few things for dinner. I got hummus, falafel, and baba ghanoush and then I noticed it. It was white as fresh snow and thick, like hummus. It was simply labeled “garlic dip”. “Could it be?” I asked myself, “could it be the same garlic puree that I loved so much at the Lebanese Taverna in DC?”

Along with some pita bread, I took all my purchases home, and tore in to it as soon as I got there. It was thick and creamy, and the explosion of garlicky goodness teetered on the brink of overwhelming, but then fell to the side of just damned delicious. It is identical to the garlic puree in DC. I’m a happy girl.

I looked up a recipe for it and as far as I can tell the dip includes four ingredients: garlic, olive oil, salt and lemon juice. Maybe I’ll try making it myself sometime.

As for the falafel and hummus, I thought they were both okay, but I loved the deep smokiness of the baba ghanoush.
